I'm going to look at a 4-5-6 C50 this week and need some education in possible rear ends that were available in these medium duty trucks. What rear ends were available? How are they identified? And are there external markings that reveal the final drive ratio?

Hy modernbeat, there are at least a half dozen different possibilities for rear axles, depending on the trucks G.V.W., and its original usage. There are single speeds, two speeds, and double reduction rear ends possible in that year/size of truck. There are "corporation" rear axles (Salibury I think), Eatons, and Timkens. Some rear axles have the part number and the ring and pinion gear count stamped into the end of the pinion gear, just divide the small number into the big one to find the ratio, I hope that helps.

Modernbeat;

Take a look at this site for good general info on mid sixties medium duty trucks.

http://www.chevyc60.com

While it doesn't have specific answers for identification, it provides a lot of good reading and photos.
