Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 152 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 152 | I have had my 49 chevy one ton pickup out a few times for test runs. Everytime I get back the brakes are dragging bad. I've backed off the adjustment on front and back several times, But the brakes drag and the drums get very hot. I have rebuilt the wheel cylinders, replaced shoes with bonded shoes from Jim Carter, I've replaced all rubber and steel brake lines. Any ideas on what the problem might be? Thanks Terry

It sounds like your master is not returning to its fully released position, and the pressure is not being allowed to fully release. After a long time of inactivity the pressure will bleed off, so each new trip starts out without a problem. The compensating port in the master cylinder might be plugged with rust or debris also. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 152 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 152 | The master cylinder was replaced about 5 years ago. I cleaned it up but, It might be bad. It seems like the pressure is not releasing when the brakes are not applyed.

If you look in the service manual it will show you how to adjust it. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | When you first push on the pedal after sitting for a day, does the pedal go further down then the next immediate application? When you back off on the brake adjustment, that should cause a considerable change in pedal height. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | I agree with Bobb, it sounds like the compensating port is blocked. If anyone has messed with the master cylinder they often put the front stop washer in back wards, the result is that the rod and piston can't return far enough to clear the port. Same symptoms as a plugged port, in other words over 15 to 30 minute period they will bleed down so you can drive it again until you apply the brakes again. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL
