on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 687 | I'm going to have the drive shaft (or torque tube??) out of my 1950 3600 Chevy. While it's out, I want to fix some small leaks at the rear of the transmission and the center u-joint. Can someone tell me if there are seals in there and if NAPA carries them? I can't find them on the LMC site.
Thank you. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 | | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 687 | Thanks Kurt. I've never ordered from Jim Carter, but heard good things about them. I ordered what I needed so we'll see what happens. The thow out bearing is making noise (and it's new) so I have a feeling the previous owner that had someone put it in, used the wrong one. I orderded the one that is 1 7/8" long. I think they used the later one that is only 1 1/5" long. We'll see. I'm assuming thats the U-Joint. I looked at the link above for the Gaskets and seals....Why is there 2 sets of 4 gaskets that are the same? Nothing else is leaaking except that connection. I re-tightened the bolts(they were loose),but when I stop she dribbles...bothers me to no end.
Thanks

I believe the multiple gaskets are used so you can shim the cover so that the ball part of the joint at the end of the torque tube will be neither too loose nor too tight. I am guessing that there are two different gasket designs because there are two different cover designs.
Mine takes the four bolt gasket. I have the four speed in a 1951 1/2 ton.
Does sound like your seal is shot.
