For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 | So, just like the title says, I'm wondering if anyone here has a sweet roof rack set up on their truck. I'm fishing around for ideas you see! | | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 13 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 13 | I have an original Carter Carpac rack, one of the rarer long ones that fit well on a Suburban or panel. Not too hard to find the shorter wagon ones, but the long ones are rare. www.classicracks.com repo's these racks, but they are pricey. If you look at the 2011 Stovebolt Panels and Suburbans calendar my Suburban is in there with the rack on. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 1,388 | Oh, aren't those beautiful! I saw that site last night after I posted. I was surprised that there wasn't a website for old car rack collectors!
Frankly, those racks are out of my league, unless I chance upon one at a garage sale. They sure look great though. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 835 | My dad built a succession of roof racks for our 50' era station wagons, 1960 VW bus and finally our 1964 Suburban. We drove the burb from NC to Colorado and back the summer of '64, camping the whole way.
The racks he built looked a lot like the Carter rack.
Maybe you could pick up the basic hardware and build one......

The vintage ones can routinely be found for under $400, the problem is shipping them if they are not near you. Also, the longer ones are hard to find. I prefer the longer one, but the medium size station wagon ones look ok on the Panel's too. If you find one that is missing a few parts that classicracks company supposedly sells individual pieces, although I have not tried to buy from them yet. I need to replace all the rubber discs under the mounts. | | |
