After drilling for full pressure to the oil filter, a good washing and running gun brushes through the oil passages, I'm about to set the main bearings to .015 plastigage on the crank. Then set the cam bearings in and the cam. Any tips or suggestions. This is my first build and I have pages from the 56 manual. If you did then make sure you use the shim kit with proper clearence on main bearing. Sometimes you will luck out and get proper clearance without it but check just to be sure. Larryw

It's hard enough to get any oil holes aligned with the passages in the block with nothing else in the way. It's almost impossible to see what you're doing with the crankshaft in place. Be absolutely sure all the cam bearings are installed straight and the cam turns freely in them before doing anything else on the buildup. Jerry

I'll set the cam bearings first making sure the cam turns freely as advised and set the crank to 0.0015. I did get some shims with the kit. It is amazing how these little slivers of brass do so much.
Quick question, my oil pan has machined divits where the oil pan bolts go through leaving just a little gap between the pan and the block surface. Is this gap ok and when I paint the motor will this pose a problem getting paint inside the block???
