I am considering geting a 1955 Chevy 6400 "Big Bolt" truck from my grandad that has been parked in a field the past 15 years. I am assuming that the fluids in the pumpkin of the rear axle have turned to bubble gum. I have never changed out the rear axle fluids in something this old. Is there a specific fluid that I should change it out with? Or is it the same as any other car?

You can get 80-90W gear lube and it will work just fine. Make sure you get it cleaned good if its a mess inside.

When you take the plug out, hold it to something medal to see if it is magnetic. If not take it with you to the parts store to see if they have that size or can get it, it will attract all the little pieces of medal shavings as a rearend wears normally.

I have never heard of the magnetic plug. Thanks! Any other tips or tricks?

If it turns out to be a mess inside, how would I clean it? Do I soak it in diesel?
