Are there any specific lube points on the 3-sp column shift mechanism? My '53 is the first truck I've had with it and it seems a bit stiff or clunky to shift.

The factory manual only list lubricating the shift box on the column. If the current lube has been in there a long time, I would clean it out and add new lube.

I'm on my way home from Kansas City and my shifter got stiff today. I narrowed it down to the top bracket. Some WD40 loosened it up. I don't remember if I lubed it when I installed it but it's coming apart for some white grease when I get back home.

I finally got around to taking my shifter apart. It didn't want to come apart. The top bracket is aluminum and the piece it threads to is steel. Apparently I didn't lube it when it went back together, not realizing that the shifter rotates on these threads in use. The threads in the top bracket are now ruined. I put it back together with a generous dose of Never-seeze. I hope it holds up until I can find a used bracket. They are not reproduced for the '54-up.

If you are putting one together I'd recommend a coat of anti seize on these threads.

i cleaned up the shifter box on my 56 3-spd, including the removal of all of the grease inside it (more like grease+dirt sludge). So... what should i replace this grease with? Cornhead seems too thin.

I'd be cautious about using chassis or wheel bearing grease esp in cold weather. Things may get a bit stiff. I think corn head grease would be just fine.
