Does anyone know if I can switch out a 3 speed tranny in my 41 half ton for a 4 speed without any complications?
Thanks

The answer is yes, but why would you want to? You can get a 4 speed crash box, that would give you a granny low and no syncronized gears. The 3 speed is much more driveable.

If you are considering a more modern 4 speed, it will take a little more work. The bolt patern in the front that mounts to the bellhousing is different, and there is also the problem with the torque tube rear end. For the hassel involved, you would probably be happier with the 3 speed, or converting it with a T-5 5 speed. That is just my $.02.

There are a couple of other thing you will need to do for the swap you are talking about. One is that you will need to do some adjustments to the pedal assembly. The 4 spd is wider than the 3spd so the extra material on the pedal assembly where it bolts to the trans will heve to be removed. Also you might have to change the u-joint.

As bigbad... said the 3spd is a much more driveable trans.

Unless, of course you want to pull stumps. My manual lists the 4 speed first gear as 7.226 to 1. I have this in my ¾ ton and it is pretty much useless for normal driving. Now that “unsynchronized stuff is a whole nother story. It is great, as not many people will ask to drive it a second time wink

If you are like me - I just wanted a 4 speed floor shifter instead of the 3 on the tree. So, I got one from Tom's Truck Parts in Tulsa.

They are a lot heavier. I think around 135 pounds. But you can do it. Get what you want. Just put an add in the Truck Parts Wanted section.

My take on this.
