Since I made it that far, I am wondering if I should go ahead and change the rear main seal. Although I have never done that job, it looks simple enough in the shop manual.
I don't believe the rear main seal is leaking. Don't see any oil on the flywheel or clutch. If you change oil regularly it will probably last a long time.

The way my luck goes I'd replace it and then the seal wouldn't seat quite perfectly and start leaking. Then I'd have to pull the pan again and fight to get all that fresh gasket material off, not get it all completly off and have a leak at the pan. By the time I've had the pan down for the 3rd time I'd be so [censored] I'd forget where I put the bolts and have to run to the store and get replacements where upon returning home I'd see the pile of bolts sitting right there under the truck.........

We'll see how my luck holds out. Changing the pan gasket wasn't as hard as I expected, so if the seal does start leaking, I can get 'er done.
