This winter I plan to remove the bed of my 49. Apart from the 6 long bolts what else is there? I am thinking of taking off the fenders with the bed as long as I can get enough strong bodies to lift. Otherwise I'll leave them on the truck. The wood boards will come out first.

I just did that to my 49 3100 you will also need to remove the running board bolts to rear the fenders and support bars under rear fenders to frame. Then 2 people can lift it off

If you plan on lifting it off in one piece,leave the floor in.The box will be awful floppy otherwise.The tail light wiring will need to be disconnected

Taking the wood out does remove a fair bit of weight though.
I and two others easily lifted the bed off and kept everything 'square'.
Since then I have had the bed on and off a few times and didn't experience any problems at all.
Just be careful......
