I have my 55.1 on the road and have been driving for 6 months and have had a very small vibration at speed but not very noticable around town. The other day I decided to have the driveshaft balanced. When I installled the new drivesaft and u-joints the vibration is very pronounced even at low speeds. I can see that the new ujoints do not sit in the yoke at the back of the transmission evenly the yoke is wore out. I looked for another yoke and am told they are not available. The truck is a 55 first series 1/2 ton with a 4 speed trans and open drive. Does anyone know of a distributor of this yoke or does someone rebuild them? I live in Los Angeles.

Thanks
Tony

Tony Romero,

Do I understand the vibration was slight, and in an effort to remedy it you had the drive line balanced and now it is horrible.

Yah I don't either but I called the guy who balanced it and he said it was the yoke. When I put it up in the air and put the it in gear I could see the wobble. I pulled the driveshaft and looked in the yoke and can see wear marks form the old u'joint caps and the stops at either end of the yoke are worn as well allowing it to move left to right in the seat. I tried to center it and the wobble is less violent but its still worse than when I started

Tony,

Something is rotten in LA. I have never seen the fit on a yoke wear out. The little bearing caps are a VERY tight fit and are held in with clips either on the inside or snap rings affairs on the outside. It sure sounds like you have the wrong U-joint installed.

I swapped them. I have never seen this either but everything else I try doesn't help so I am going with the suggestion of the driveshaft guy.

Tony,
This same thing happened to me several years back on a 59 gmc. The shop told me the same exact thing, that I needed a new yoke. I didn't believe them. I replaced the u-joints, and was good for another 50,000 miles. Evidently had slipped a needle bearing on installation.

Check with 4 the usual 4wd shops in your area... I am sure they could hook you up with the right yoke. Is that a fixed yoke, or a slip yoke?
