I finally have all the parts collected to start my T5 swap. I need to know about cutting off the T5 bearing retainer. I have read all the threads but I'm not sure how much to cut off.

I need to use an adaptor for my 216 bell housing so do I measure the length from the adaptor plate or do I use the length of the bearing retainer from my original trans. There may be as much as 1/4" difference between these two measurements. Does this matter?

I know that several of the Stovebolt family have made this swap using an adaptor, so what did you do?

George, I've never done a T5 conversion but as general practice I'd make it as long as possible for max. slider support. Mock up all the clutch & other parts, see a what point it contacts anything & cut it so when everything is bolted together there will be say 1/4" of running clearance. Doug

I have done many T5 conversions without an adapter, and I cut 1" off the retainer and 1/4" off the input shaft. You would need to subtract the thickness of the adapter from the 1" and you may not need to cut the shaft.

Measure the length of the pilot shaft of your original transmission. Then Measure the length of the bearing retainer from the transmission mounting surface. Then Measure the thickness of the adapter plate (1/2 inch 6061 alluminum?).

What you are trying to accomplish is to get the new transmission to look like the old one as far as the engine is concerned. Take the thickness of the adapter plate in to account. If the original transmission has a bearing retainer that is 5 inches long, the T-5 should have a bearing retainer that is 5 and 1/2 inches If you are using a 1/2 inch thick adapter plate. (PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DIMENSIONS GIVEN ARE ONLY EXAMPLES AND NOT ACTUAL MEASUREMENTS) Due to the added thickness of the adapter plate, it is unlikely that you will have to extend the splines to get more clutch travel.

Thanks guys. I thought that I needed to take the thickness of the adaptor into account, but I thought I would check with those of you that have done this before.
