my panel has an odd gas tank and I was wondering if it is the same tank as a 2nd series pick up ?

mine seems to have a diagonal seam in it . I found a 2nd series tank used in great shape but want o be sure it will work before I buy it .

thanks again

I just realized that the tank that is in there may not be for a 55 truck/ panel at all . I really have no idea if it's correct or not . I guess the question still remains is a 55 truck tank the correct or at least useable tank for a 55 panel ?

yes you have an original panel tank, odd shape attached to the passenger side frame rail, the pickup tank is inside the cab behind the seat, wouldn't work too well in a panel wink

mike, i dont think it would work at all. the best bet in my opinion is to clean out your old one and seal it to prevent further rusting with stuff you buy online from summit for example (if the condition is not too bad). it will even fix pinholes if that's all you have. if it's beyond repair you have 2 choices: either find a good used one from a burb/panel or put a fuel cell somehow which would be alot more work to put under the vehicle (i dont trust fuel cells inside, unless its inside a trunk which you dont have). that's my 2 cents. hope that helps. -jrsotojr

I can't imagine finding any other than a one-off custom made tank fitting in the correct location to connect to the filler door ... from your original note of the 'diagonal seam' you have the tank all 55-59 panels and burbs had, which if properly retained by the original straps nearly touching the wood floor, doesn't hang too far below the frame, unless your retainer straps are wrong .... if you plan on having the truck long, get yourself an assembly manual, fuel tanks are in section 8

Well then I'll try and use the one on there if it's actually the right one
... Also means I have a 55 truck tank in real good shape to sell

yes that's the original tank, but the strap hardware is not [the eyebolt particularly], and it looks like the straps are too loose

Ok I'll drop the tank and clean it up ... I haven't been under there much yet , do the original tanks have a drain bolt on them by chance

Like Squeeze said, nice orig tank. I don't get why you wanted to swap it out? take it off, put a little soap and water in it and a piece of chain or socks full of rocks and suspend it on some ropes and shake it all day. Clean out good, fill with water and see if it leaks. Acetone and some other solvents will work if it's real gummy inside. Swimming pool acid helps (Hydrochloric). Don't use muratic. You can get tank cleaning kits from POR/Eastwood and others. They do work well. Keep the stock one if you can, but they are only about 16-17 Gal.

I thought it was the wrong one because it sat so funny - I went by all the other stuff the D.A.P.O. did to it and just assumed it was a random tank . Glad I asked lol

there are no panel specific parts available that don't also fit the pickup, so no tank straps, you would have to get dimensions and pics from some one to fab some up yourself
