I've read about the 1000 hour maintenance of the distributor, just hadn't gotten to that on my list o' stuff to do until today. I'm replacing the distributor with a rebuilt, and in the process of moving things from the core to the new unit, ran into this: the way I see it the grease cup (item #2) drives grease to the distributor shaft by rotating it. Whats confusing to me is item #4, the fiber plug. It is flat on one side , concave on the other, obviously from riding on the shaft. It seems to be quite hard, more than I expected. Should I replace it? If so, any idea where to get one? Sorry this was so long. Ed

There was no response to above :rolleyes: , so I just put the old fiber plug in where I thought would be right. The grease cup almost did this distributor in, plenty of grease in there! Put some more pics on the page on how it looks now.

This setup is designed to take any play out of the shaft. If the round disc is not worn to thin than reuse is fine.

The grease cup should not be tight to the distributor. It is a metering device meant to be turned 1 turn for each 1000 miles driven and refilled when it begins to tighten.

Wow...I did not know that...Mine is tight,What type of grease...(oil) goes in the grease cup??Sorry...I am learning as I go..I have done a lot of reading out of my Shop Manual..ect...But I just cant take everything in, Its overwellming at times. M/G

There's probably some recommendation in the manuals, but, when you think about what its doing, I think you can get by with any good grease that resists water.

Mike, the cup body is a 1/8"npt it should be tight in the distributor housing, the cup itself should be filled with chassis grease as per the spec in the manual.
