This is a little embarassing, but only slightly. I think I have the front and back of the latches confused. I found picks on another forum. It is the rear that I am missing. I think the photo I found is of a '39, and it is enough to get me started. Again, I have to manufacture the rear hood latches. The photo is taken directly from the front. If I could get another from the side, so as to see the angle a bit better, I would be in tall cotton.

I'm doing a frame up on a '39 JD pickup. The front hood latches are missing. It's the part that bolts to the inside of the front shell,and into which the hood locking mechanism attaches, or meshes. I have searched all the sites, and parts places, that I can find, and I have found nothing available.

If anyone has a '39 with that piece in place, I would really appreciate a couple of digital photos so I can make a replacement.

Might check out this guy on ebay. He had a complete set of the latches for sale for $9.99 and they did not sell. These are not mine, just noticed them for sale. Might get in touch with him and see if he still has.

I'll take a copy of the pic to the shop, and see how the fronts compare with mine. I know there were changes, year to year, but I'm not sure what and when.

I crawled in as close as I could on your pics. There seems to be a difference between yours ('40), and my '39. I can't tell for sure. I will have to get it back together enough to work the latch system, and see what's happening.

I just primered the box, and front pieces. The body is done and mounted. I'm slow.

That's a really fine looking truck that you have.

We just came back from Hot August Nights in Reno. The only old chev truck that we saw was a '36. No '39s or '40s. And I saw no 235s in anything. We probably saw a small percentage of all that was there, but a good sampling, none the less. I think our trucks are becoming increasingly rare.

I have not come across another '39 or '40 in my travels. We hit a good number of shows, so I think you are right about rarity.
As to speed, took me almost 5 years to get mine on the road, and I farmed out the painting. Keep plugging !

I just found a pic of the rear latch. That is what I have, so I am missing the front piece, or rather, both front pieces (left and right). I can't find a clear photo of those. Most of the pics are from the outside, and only show the ear that extends, and not much of that. A couple of clear digitals would certainly help. [email protected] I have about 2 years on the frame off project. I've owned the truck since '61, and have had it in Mexico, Canada, DC, and New Orleans under it's own power. I commuted to work until about '87. but continued to use it until '94 when it was parked until now. It now has a fresh '58 235, and the cab is painted and mounted on the chassis. As we speak, I am fighting primer on the bed and front parts. All new to me, so the learning curve is steep, but it keeps me busy. Ah, but the question still remains...are the latches on the '40 the same as the latches on the '39? I don't know...yet.

Gary....we are in Cloverdale, which is just across the border, about 10 minutes from the Peace Arch crossing on I-5. We don't usually get as far south as Seattle with the '40. Hit a few shows around the Bellingham area.

The we might run into each other at some point. It's a long shot, but not impossible. I don't think I will ever enter any shows, but our son up in that area does like to attend them. We don't go up to Bellingham much, but it is a nice area to visit. I will remember your truck.

I finally managed to pull in the pics of the ones on ebay, and make a reasonable copy. After much twisting and comparing, I've decided they are the correct latches. I have to scale them down a bit, but I may fiddle with an attempt to make them. Looks like an interesting challenge.
