10 years ago when I repowered my 50 1 ton chevy with a V8 auto, I used a air cond condenser for a trans cooler, although I did"nt know how hot the trans fluid got I did drive it cross country with a full load and used it as a daily driver for 3 years with no trans problems while using the stock radiator the whole time. I"v searched the net and have"nt heard of anyone who"s cooled a trans with a ac condenser.... mabey there"s a good reason or mabey I"m just a cheap but crafty old sob! any thoughts?

If you are looking for confirmation of you being cheap you probably need to ask your wife or kids. Sounds like a safe bet though. wink

As for the trans cooler it sounds like a functional solution.

I have been using a power steering cooler from 1978 f#&d f-150 for about 7 years now. I don't haul many loads but havent had any problems. O, yeah, it was a freebie and i used the clamps that came on it. Bought about 2 foot of fuel line though.

If I were you I"d install a temp sending unit and of coarse a gauge on the line before the oil cooler to monitor the trans fluid temp, then you"ll know if your about to have a tranny roast. Thats what I"m going to do cause I"m not to keen on dropin $475 for a radiator with trans cooling ability when the stock rad will work just fine.

The only problem I see with using an AC condenser is that the coils may be too small and restrict the oil flow from the transmission, causing too much pressure drop. Check the oil pressure at the transmission to make sure the cooler isn't restricting it. Too little pressure might make it slip or cause funky shifting problems.

A good cheap cooler would be to find an oil cooler off a motorcycle, junkyard Porsche, SAAB, or BMW. All '88-92 BMW 325i's have a nice rectangular oil cooler mounted right below the radiator that hooks up to the engine oil and flows pretty well. They are easy to get out if you can find one at a U-pull-it, and they rarely go bad.
