I've installed a '60 235 in my '42 1/2t PU. I used the short shaft water pump. The fan sits pretty low in relation to the radiator...will this adversely effect its cooling efficiency? The truck appears to run pretty cool in normal conditions, but I haven't really run it hard in warm weather. Comment/thoughts?

Steve, I have about the same setup as you have. First make sure your radiator is in good condition and clean. The old guy that worked on my radiator also put on a new filler neck so I could use a pressure cap and plugged the overflow on the top of the radiator. (The new filler neck has an over flow built in.) It's just like a modern radiator.

If you do this it's important NOT to use more than a 7 lb cap. Any more than that and you will tear out the seams of the ratiator.

With this setup the only time my temp guage goes up is when I'm sitting in one place for a long time. I have toyed with the idea of adding a cooling fan on the front of the rad. just for the times when I'm sittin around, but I haven't done it yet.

Try out your system as-is in the warm weather and see how it performs. It will probably be ok.

When in doubt, cheat. Have you considered an electric fan? You might have to change the motor if your electrical system is still 6 volt.

Short water pumps, electric fans......why not fix it right! Buy the adaptor plate, use the correct "early" style waterpump that has the correct diameter pulley, and get your fan centered on the radiator and forget about overheating problems.

I went through "short pumps", electric fans and finally got it right. In addition to proper cooling, you can get a stock early 216-235 pump from NAPA/Azone/Advanced without sitting on the porch, waiting for the UPS truck! I've got some pics in my album and info on the adaptor plate process. Hope this helps.

Fla54...you're right...should have done it correctly the 1st time...adapter plate! For the time being, I'll run the truck as is ...and hope for the best. Thanks for the input.

Steve,

I originally installed the short shaft water pump on my 235 but after reading and researching here went ahead and switched to the adapter plate. This was done prior to ever turning the newly remanufactured 235 over. It just makes sense to me. Also, like Fl54 said, I did get a new water pump at Advanced Auto.
