292 into 47 AD. I was offered dirt cheap powdercoating for small bits, and I was thinking of:
timing cover - black
alt. bracket - black
therm. housing - dull chrome

For paint I originally thought of orange for the motor, but may do gray to convince people it's "the stock six with just HEI" I'll POR the firewall and inner fenders black.

Penny for your thoughts, and all possibilities will be considered and greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, danroy.com is down, so I'll keep searching for the proper color for my year.

Thanks a ton,

Jason

That grey sounds like a good idea. It,s period correct. I would paint the timing cover the same & do the water pump pulley & engine mount brackets in black. I use an aerosol color called Cast coat aluminum. It looks like fresh aluminum on the alt. & fuel pump.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

A 292 is a mean engine espeacially for an AD Chevy. I think if it was my project I would go for a Yellow and polished look... yelow block, polished aluminum valve and side covers, chrome alternator, ceramicoated stainless headers, aluminum intake, etc. I would leave the starter and fan black. I don't like those anodized aluminum fittings for the oil, fuel, and pcv, So I would stay away from those. Those are my thoughts... but it may not fit with your theme.

I hope more people chime in to give you more ideas, and or photos!

I went with a Chevy Orange with my recent engine change...really made my engine compartment "POP". Wouldn't spend much time or effort on the timing cover....it and the side cover are fairly well hidden. Used a hammermill paint on the brackets. Have some pics in my albums.....you be the judge!!

My body guy suggested the block red, the head silver, and the valve cover powder coated black. Don't like it. All orange just seems right for a Chevy hot rod, but I think any six will be sneaky for someone who doesn't know better, right? Thanks for the replies, fellas...

I would paint engine/valvecover/timingcover grey,
oilpan/brkts black. My 2 cents.

I did mine Victory-Gray and aluminum with some minor black dress up.

I would definately stay away from the black on the valve cover. Look at my pics to see a stock cover sanded clean and powder coated with high temp clear. I'll be doing the same to my aircleaners, sidecover, oilpan, timing gear cover when I switch to dual carbs and a 261.
I still have yet to decide on engine and head color.

I'm planning to put a 292 in my '51 4400, and I haven't decided on colors yet either. Don't do what I did with my very first engine, a 1 liter 4 in a 1962 Austin Healey Sprite. I painted all of the accessory cover flat silver and the block with Spherex VHT white. The engine never really developed any fluid leaks, but the white looked a little dingy within a year.
