Hi Guys I just installed a high torque 3hp starter on my 350 which lives in my 1950 1/2 ton. What a difference! Instead of grunting when trying to start a hot engine it now sounds like I'm cranking up a jet engine. Best $75 I've spent in a long time.

Hello, did you have to shim the new starter? If so, was it difficult?

Hi APV60, It was a simple bolt in, no shims needed. The starter comes with (2) shims if needed. Before the new starter it would give me a hard time when it was hot. Now it spins really quick. A rebuilt starter from NAPA cost the same, but what a difference.

Did you check the tooth engagement on the starter gear, or just assume that it was right? I like to spray-paint a few teeth on the flywheel, then run the starter and see how much of the paint gets rubbed off. If the starter gear teeth are bottoming out in the flywheel ring gear, install shims until there's a small area of paint left at the bottom of the tooth contact area.
