Howdy I took my old front leaf springs off and found 2 caster shims under each leaf spring and Im not sure if they were put on from the factory, it does look like old factory stampings on them. One of them was broken in half and the others still in okay shape. My question is since I am putting new leaf spring sets on will the shims still be necessary. I will get an alignment after Im all done. What can you tell me about caster shims? After reading the old '50 manual it mentions some models have them and some may not from factory? Thanks guys!

Each alignment is different. Sometimes it's necessary to tilt the axle with shims to get the right caster adjustment, sometimes not. If your alignment technician is familiar with straight axle work, he should be able to determine whether or not a shim is needed. If only one side was out of limits, we used to use special fixtures and BIG hydraulic jacks to bend axles into proper alignment. That's not done much anymore because the equipment isn't available at most shops.

Don't forget to take you're old shims with you when you take the truck for the alignment most shops don't even have them anymore.

I found some at an old truck shop when I needed them.

Shims are still available in different gradients. Any spring and axle shop will have them.
