Anyone know if an earlier year grill will fit on a 54 AD? Just like the grill better.

Not nicely/easily, if you use the 54/55 fenders.

You will need to use the 47-53 sheet metal and not 54-55.1

The 54/55's have provisions for a marker light in the fenders. You could use the early grill, but you would have to fill in some holes.
