The question came to me as I was posting my other electrical questions. How can I tell if the system is still 6v or has been half converted to 12v? Being in Alaska it is common to just patch things together and half the wires look like original 6v thick crumpling wires and some look like newer 12v wires. If it's a Delco unit and it isn't marked with a voltage rating, post the part number and one of us with a parts manual or some service bulletins should be able to tell you which voltage rating it has. It's a little more difficult to identify a generator with the tag missing.
