guys,
do any of you know a website that shows v-belt lengths and widths ?
i have search the net and cant find one.
i need a v-belt that 54" long and .440 wide.

last weekend i changed my alternator fromt he passengers side to the drivers side in anticipation for an a/c compressor that i want on the passengers side.
i used late 60's small block alternator brackets that put it on the drivers side. it is squarely in line with the other pulleys, but using a different groove in the pulleys that have been bare for a long time.
truck runs fine, in gear stomping on the gas, etc, no squealing. BUT, in park, if i snap the throttle, i get a sharp squeak in the belt in the area between the crank and water pump pulley, about a 3-4" span. i can actually see the belt in that short area wobble.
i cleaned both water pump and crank pulley with scotch brite and #220 grit sand paper, then cleaned it all off with brake cleaner, the ultra fast drying stuff. put the belt back ona nd it still squeaked. sprayed it with some belt dressing, and it still squeaks only at the sharp throttl rev in park.
i am running a brand new belt, but its one of those belts that a ribbed on the inside. i want to try a solid belt and see what happens, that whay im looking for a cross reference so i can just walk in the auto store and tell them what i need.
any thought guys ? if i cant get it stop this, i will return the alternator to the passengers side, and just have to run the compressor on the driver side, with the a/c lines crossing the motor, which i dont like.... but i aint gonna live with this squeal.

thansk in advance.

The part number signafies the dementions. A good parts man should be able to grab one off the rack with those sises.

I dont know what your setup is like but the contact distance on an acessory is important. The amount of units you drive off each belt also. If a fan is too agressive or a locked up fan clutch can cause belt slippage. If the alt. is higher amp. then the system is designd for & the bat. is low it will be too much load for the belt.

Leonard,

The images in your photobucket album show that your alternator installation is similar to the one on my 1968 327. However, I don't see the brace that goes between the upper water pump bolt to the forward end of the alternator support bracket. That brace may be needed to prevent the alternator support bracket from deflecting. How much tension is in the belt? The shop manual calls for 75 pounds, I believe.

Leonard, I agree with Hoyt that you need another brace. If you can turn the alternator by pushing on the fan on the pulley with your thumb the belt needs to tightened. (engine off of coarse) Once its adjusted and it still slips you have confirmed that the brackets are deflecting and causing your slipping. Good Luck Don
