I was changing brake shoes on my 55 1/2 ton and found rear end dope inside the drum on the drivers side. So I will have to change the seal. The truck has the stock rear end and brakes. My question is how hard is it to change the axle seal. And how is it done exactly? I ran a search on the net and really didn't find much on the subject. And looked it up in the shop manual and it is kind of vague. Thanks for any help in advance

what's vague about it? the seal is on top, easy job - if it looks like you need to replace the bearing, you just have to be creative about getting it done without those fancy factory tools, lots of folks here have done it, don't be intimidated wink

Thanks for the reply and the help. I'm going to replace both sides. And was just wondering how long it would take to do the job. And what all was involved in it. The service manual makes it seem like a couple hours worth of work. I just finished restoring the old truck about a month ago and thought I was finished. But I didn't think of the rear seals and bearings. I found this morning that it wasn't the axle seal leaking but the new brake cylinder leaking fluid. I replaced all the brake components, master cylinder, lines, etc. It was late last night when me and the wife was bleeding the brakes so when I seen fluid around the tire rim and back of brake drum I thought it was rear end dope. We gave up bleeding the brakes for the night. But this morning I checked it out and after wiping some of it up with a rag I noticed that it didn't smell like rear end dope. I pulled the drum and found some fluid on the brake shoes and drum. That's when I noticed the brake cylinder was locked open. Thanks again for the reply and help. This forum is the best on the net for info and help on the old trucks. I hope it is here for years to come.

If you got brake fluid on your shoes they are ruined.

Yup, got a replacement set from local parts house. Thanks for the heads up on the brake shoes. I was also going to change out the brake cylinder. I took it off and it seemed to work alright. But I don't play around when it comes to brakes.
