I am trying to get antique plates and the vehicle has to be stock appearing. I took off my aftermarket rims and put the stock black steel wheels back on and took photos as requested. It was rejected as they want to see a picture with the original wheel covers. Were wheel covers an option as I do not have any caps? I need to find somewhere that it states you could order a stripped down 66 with just the steel wheels? any help from anybody?

This thread shows the most information I’ve found regarding stock 66 steel wheels. I would imagine you might have convinced a dealer to give a $5.00 discount for keeping the new truck hubcaps, but don’t think you’ll find anything in writing confirming this as an option.

This Ebay listing claims to offer 66 Chevy wheel covers, but I have no idea if these are stock or not:

I wouldn’t think these would be necessary for registration, just something that looks somewhat original. I wouldn’t imagine the DMV employees are experts in antique trucks.

Chrome or painted dog dish hub caps were an option on the '66 Chevy 2wd trucks and not found on the 4x4 trucks. The caps in the eBay listing are not factory wheel covers for a '66 Chevy truck.

Where does the law say that the vehicle has to have hubcaps, and how would they know if they came with them or not ? These guys are getting a little bit carried away. Big Brother is really watching you in PA.....Kieth

Kieth - most places if you want 'antique' or 'classic' registration, the vehicle is required to be as delivered, some places want near museum condition - has little to do with 'big brother' and a lot to do with folks trying to get cheap registration/insurance on an old vehicle that may just be a beater

One guy here could not get antique tags because his Mustang was candy apple red-they told him it wasn't availble in that color that year. My buddy has antique tags on his '51 3100-w/a Corvette rear, mustang II front end, Tbird rack, bumper about 3" from the ground, Tuned port 350, power windows, bucket seats, etc in seafoam green primer w/IROC wheels. It all depends on who you talk to at the DMV & what mood they are in at the time.

Thanks for all the input so far. I might try to upload a before and after picture of the truck later today. Chris

Wow. I got Historic plates here in AZ just by asking for them, I think here they just go off of the age of the vehicle. (I saw a mid-80s Mustang with them once!)

Antique insurance, on the other hand, you need to work a little to get. I'm still waiting to put my bed in before I get mine appraised in order to get that. I think there are also restrictions on how much you drive it and whatnot.

Good luck Chris.

It is the same here in Mississippi, our antique tags are given out based on the age of the vehicle. Any vehicle over 25 years of age qualifies for an antique tag. Don't really see where it matters if the vehicle is a "beater" or is in pristine condition...

Nevada has classic, hot rod even horseless carriage plates.
We also have a 1-ton & up classic truck for parades only.

yep, & good for the life of the vehicle...i'm originally from northeast MS...in FL you have to renew the antique tags (i lived there) like regular plates...my truck is still in MS at my dad's place so i haven't had to tag it here in SC...btw, i moved here from Brandon smile

NC is far easier. Vehicle just has to be 35 years or older. No stipulations on anything else or factory equipment. Best part is not having to get state inspections due to being over 35 years old.
