Has anyone set the side windows and windshield on a 46 half ton? If so what type of glass setting tape did you use? I got some from J.C. but it's so thin that the glass is loose in the frame. Just wondering what thickness was used. Thanks G

If you bought replacement glass, it may be thinner than the original. A good glass shop should have different thicknesses of setting tape. I am not looking forward to replacing mine, but it's gonna happen sometime soon............

That makes sense. I have my old glass so I can check it against the new. I'm not sure if it's recommended but I doubled the tape and it went together nice and tight and I didn't break the glass! I may take a piece of what I have and see what I can find locally.

By the way it wasn't too bad to get apart and I soaked it down with Dawn dish soap to get it all together.

Just a thought Gmans, is your replacement glass Tempered?
If so you may find it's thinner than the original laminated glass.
There are different thicknesses of laminated glass too though.

Doubling up the setting tape is fine,no point in changing the glass if it works!

Yes sir you are correct it is thinner, I have enough tape I think to get it all together.

I finished one side window and will tackle the other side and windshield tomorrow. I had other projects today, yuck! LOL. I'll take my camera to the shop.

If it is also tempered,it's much more forgiving to work with,just don't 'dink' the edges....

A 1/4" thick piece of tempered glass will easily support my not inconsiderable weight.....

Well things were going really well, maybe too well. I got both the side glass installed in their frames and the windshield. I was so proud of my progress I snapped a few pics. Then I went and started to tighten all my screws in the windshield frame and I must have torqued a little to much cause I cracked both sides! :mad: ,Now it's going to a glass shop and they can do it.

As i've said before laminated glass is much less forgiving than tempered,although I realise your windshields have to be laminated by law.

It sounds like your screws are a little too long (I assume they are the correct ones),alternatively it's possible the glass is a touch too big.
(Did you buy it pre-cut from a vendor,or did you have them cut locally?)

Quite often glass cut for frames has small clearance cuts made at frame joints to clear brackets and/or screws.
Any screws etc should be able to be snugged down without fear of cracking the glass.

I'm not entirely sure about the 'anatomy' of 46 frames so these reasons may not apply in your circumstance.

My knowledge is based on British vehicles from a similar era.
It might be worth looking into though.

BTW The door glasses look great!

I bought a pre-cut package off of E-Bay. I think the problem started when I joined the two halves the gap of the glass in the center was wider at the bottom of the frame than towards the top, so when positioning the rubber and center strip it was quite tight at the top. Then tightening the screws drawing it up was more than it wanted. I should have known better so now I will get it cut to fit and let them put it together. LOL. The bright side is the door glass fit together really well. Now I'll be gun shy when trying to put in the rear glass.

I hear you, I made templates from a set my friend bought for his A.D. from a reputable vendor.
Bottom line...they didn't fit worth a monkeys .....!

The bottom radii were so far out you could see daylight between the rubber and the cab.
I'll be templating mine directly from my own cab and re-doing them soon.
That's once i've bought a new seal to replaced the cheap R.O.C. rubber I have just now.
It's not even been on the road yet and the seal has degraded already. :mad:

Any good glass tech worth his/her salt should be able to cut and install your glass without incident.
If he/she does break it it's then down to them assuming there's no problems with the frame itself.

Thanks, I dropped it off this morning he said he would have it back to me Tuesday. I'm sweating bullets trying to get this truck ready to make the Nationals on Aug 4th. Waiting on my fenders from the body shop then the cab and bed go over for prep and primer. I may be fighting a losing battle. LOL.
