Still have starter binding problem, we looked at flywheel and the number is 3789733. Does anyone know if they used more than one type flywheel on 292.
I have a 1953 Chevy 3800 with a 66 or newer 292 engine that has a starter problem. When I bought the truck the starter did work but one of the bolt holes on the starter housing was broken out and the starter was hanging loose. I went to a junkyard and got another starter off a 292, bolted it up and the starter won't engage.

#76571 04/22/2007 12:35 AM | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,094 | The nose on some of the starters are different, some old ones bolt to the bellhousing and some bolt to the block.The later models usually had 2 bolts and bolted to the block, there were 2 different noses for the starters, one was for a larger flywheel. pull the starter and look at the nose on both of them and see what you have.Other than that you could take the soeniod off of the starter and look at the engagement between the starter and flywheel, if it's tight there are shims available to shim the starter down from the block.
