When I back off the gas @30-40 mph the engin sounds like a jake brake...Please tell me it's simple and not the valves...Not much of a engin guy...Thanks Paul

I would start by checking the timing and vacuum advance.

does it take off really good...........if so probab ly not the valves...........is it back firing or just slowing down..

Its not the valves. It probably is a vacuum leak or the idle mixture screw is lean like Tiny says. We used to turn the idle jets way in when I was young. Then wind it up in 2 nd. gear & back out of it. It would back rap. We thought that was cool.
