I am having a hard time finding rims for my 48 chev panel. Some say get rid of the split rims. If I have someone to put tires on the split rims are they safe or is it best to change now. All the rims I have found hit the tie rod end. Do you know of a rim that will fit these 8 lug hubs and not hit the rods. The other thing is a spacer. Will they work. Good or Bad. Thanks for you help

You didn't say how thick the spacer was to be, but over the years when it was needed I never had any problems using a spacer behind the wheel.
It is only my opinion, but if I could get a 1 piece wheel I'd use it rather than the split rim .....that's if you don't mind loosing the original look of the split rim.

The trouble with split rims is that if you ever need them serviced, there aren't many shops that'll touch 'em. If you have someone willing to swap the tires on the rims, you should be fine. The only other concern, is that some state's safety inspections won't permit split rims for safety reasons. That's why you won't find new ones.

I just bought new rims (single piece) and tires ($$$). Depending on the style of the rims, you may be able to have the clips attached and still maintain some of that original look.

dave what rims did you use. everything I try hits the tierod end and that is why I thought of the spacer.

You should do a search for this topic it has been discussed here numerous times, there are multiple discussions with recommendations. It also is a little off-topic in the interiors section so it may not be seen.

Brad's right. You should pose your query in General Truck Talk. Also I'd put a request for rims in the Truck Parts Wanted. I just sold my spare set of rims from my parts truck.

I have the Unique 297 - 17x8 rims. Clips probably aren't going to work, but that's not the look I want. The tie rods barely clear!
