Jul 21st, 2025 | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 424 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 424 | On my 1958 GMC, when I removed the front fenders there was evidence of a rubber type sealer (not a formed gasket) between the flanges where the fender bolts to the front panel that goes behind the grille. The factory assemby manual seems to bear out the fact that this is sealer and not a gasket.
It seems like a fairly firm compund. Eastwood's has a seam sealer that can be brushed on or out of a tube. The seamsealer I'm used to seeing usually has a putty-like consistency.
What I'm seeing on my original fenders is more of a firm rubberized compund. I imagine it's not only to seal the joint but to prevent squeaks as well. | | |
