The double groove damper and water pump pulley align perfectly. I am certain they are both correct. This is the damper that has about 1/2" space aft. The alternator is not lining up with them. I am using an alternator bracket that came off a 250. My question is...was there a unique alternator bracket for the 292 that would move the alternator farther forward 1/2"? Or was there a different pulley with an extra 1/2" spacing that accomplished this?

I used to work on 292's in school busses years ago, and if an alternator went out, I always wound up changing the pulley to make it line up.

It was spaced different than the 250. The pulley also was spaced out like Roy stated. 75 up used the narrow belt. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I have a cast iron lower bracket, but I assumed it wasn't correct since I couldn't get the alternator to align with the other pulleys. So unless there is more than one type of cast iron bracket that was used, then I probably have the right one. If anyone has a lead on the correct pulley I would appreciate it.

Where does the upper bracket attach to the block? There are no holes for it, except to use one of the water pump bolts, but even that doesn't really sit right. Is this correct?

Be shure & use a longer bolt preferably grade 8. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

The correct alternator bracket is cast iron, and has cast number 3831195. This bracket will provide a more forward offset than the stamped, spot welded bracket probably found an a 230/250. Additionally, the OEM 292 uses a unique alternator pulley that has about an extra 1/2" of spacing forward from the alternator fan. If you do not have this pulley, and simply purchase a rebuilt OEM alternator from a local parts store (#7122 in my neighborhood), it will not come out of the box with the right pulley. A special note of thanks to Mr. Larry G. in Oakdale, CA for hooking me up with that pulley. Everything lines up perfectly now, with all OEM parts, just the way it rolled out of the Fremont plant on 9-15-65.
