You could replace the cover gasket without pulling the box or the lower adj. plug if it has one. If it is the secter shaft seal you will probably need to pull the box out. Most of those old gearboxes wont hold gear grease. Ive always pumped them full of chassis grease. Ive read posts on this website of other type of grease. Some say to use John Deer cornhead grease.

The counterman enthusiastically supported my use (56 GMC 3/4 ton steering gearbox). The grease is for farm corn harvesting machinery, and the corn head has a low speed gearbox. The stuff is like jello when standing and gets runnier when the gears move and heat is generated, apparently.
