Didn't want to high jack the other thread but here is my question.

I have my wiring harness but for the time being I "hot wired" or straight wired it so I can move it around. I have it so that when I turn the switch on the electric fan runs and the only other wires I have are the ones that are switch to battery, to the starter, the distributor(internal coil). No other wiring is done so nothing to alternator ect. ect.
When I turn the ignition switch off the engine continues to run for say 3 or 4 seconds.
What makes it do this... is it "feed back" from the electric fan since it continues to turn till it coasts down???

At this point its just my curosity more than anything else.

EDIT: this is a 305 V8

Only way to confirm it would be to disconnect the fans and see what happens!

OOOPs, dang, its hard to keep EVERYONE straight. Perhaps if I call you John along with Teresa it'd made more sense. Tell Sherry I apoligize.

..Scott, just for comfort, I have a good friend, who is a stovebolter that I see regularly. His wife is named Angie but I keep saying Pam....for 5 years!!

Its OLD age creeping up on me. Thanks for being a sport.

You probably do but do you have a relay on the fans?

No BigChevy I don't. This is just a temporary thing till I get started on the wiring harness next week. I was just intriqued by the way it does it. I've left it like it is for now but when I start wiring it I plan to put a relay in line with it.... and I'm gonna unplug the fan and see if it does it. I'm just curious!

My $.02
I think you will need a diode on the alternator exciter wire regardless. All of my early Motor Manuals for Chevy cars show a diode either connected to the alternator or on the exciter wire. If you do not, the exciter will will feed back thru the ignition switch and you will have run on, just like I did on my '62. Radio Shack has them for under five bucks. Just get the "biggest" one they have like I asked for (as you can see, I am not an electrician).
