If there is a difference can the earlier aprons be modified to work on a 54 3100?

I'll look at my 54 tomorrow and compare the aprons to my 53 and let you know. After checking my aprons out, I can't see any difference between the 53 & 54. I think GM modified the bedside panel when they made the change.
