For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 23 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2007 Posts: 23 | Has anyone put a Mustang II IFS in a 41-46 truck and used the 235 six? I am concerned about clearance of the oil pan at the power rack and pinion and/or MII cross member. I know this isn't an issue when swapping in a V8, but that's not the direction this project is going.
Any words of wisdom from someone who as attempted this?
Many thanks!

With it off measure from the pan mount rail on the block to the lowest point anything on the crank rotating assembly gets to---it's usually a connecting rod nut. You can cut the taper out of the pan bottom and raise it to that measurement if more clearence is needed. I don't see a problem with pan to rack clearence since the MII rack is mounted in front of the crossmember and the pan is thinnest at this point but pan bottom to top of crossmember, who knows? We have sliced and diced pans in every conceivable manner including welding in a tube to run a draglink right through the center of the pan on some old Ford shoebox applications.

I don't have the truck in my shop yet, so I can't even give it the quick eyeball test. We can make anything fit with enough ingenuity, I am just trying to understand if it's all 'bolt in' with off the shelf parts, or if (and how much) fabrication (motor mounts, crossmember, rack and pinion, oil pan, etc.) will be needed.

It was a TCI MII full kit with power steering, installed to their specifications. The biggest challenge was the front motor mount interfered with the power rack. With maintaining the original engine and trans position we could not use the front mount - period. Not a big deal as we simply fabbed side engine mounts just as we would for a small block V8.
NOTES: A manual rack may have had enough room. Also, if we raised the motor and trans, we could have made room. Lastly, the MII cross member could have been installed lower in the frame, but this would raise the ride height.
Hope this helps folks with future projects. I have photos available. | | |
