Here's the deal. I have a '60 Apache 10 SB Step side with no engine or tranny. Originally the straight 6. I also have a '73 Caprice with a freshly built 454 that I had about 500 miles on when I got hit hard in the rear. I'd like to take the 454/TH400 and put it in the truck. Is this a relatively straight forward swap?

Sorry I have not put a big block in a 60's pickup but since it was built to hold at least a small block engine V8 I would think it can be done without to much modification? I feel others have done this so hang tight. .... just remember, with the 454 it will use "MoGas" sorry, just couldn't resist. | | | | Joined: May 2011 Posts: 3 New Guy | New Guy Joined: May 2011 Posts: 3 | I know it will not be the most economical thing to run to the Home Depot, but neither is my '68 442......
I use my little '94 4 cylinder Toyota pickup for daily driving. When I want to go fast, I wanna GO FAST!!!!
I really don't want to part either vehicle out, so I think it would be a nice marriage.
My thoughts are: Beef up the rear end and convert to front discs, then pretty much drive it like my socks are on fire.

If my friend can put a 454 in his 53 chevy sedan I know you can put one in a truck.... oh, and I like to GoFast myself!! | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 28,674 | I've got a project on the "to do" list, a 59 Burb that's going to get a 75 Caddy 500 with a TH 400 behind it. That one's going to be my trailer tow rig, with a 3/4 ton IFS and an 8-lug Dana 60 Detroit locker rear end. Jerry

I got mine from ebay. I used Sanderson headers. There was a very small amount of trimming necessary for clearance and it was hardly noticeable. Make your own tranny mount. | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 | Well lets see here.I have a 1965 with a 500 inch Caddy motor and 400 trans.runs just fine.I bought it this way so dont know about difficulty of installation. | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 21 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 21 | It fits. I had a 66 with a 454 and a Art Carr tubro 400 with a Gearvendor OD. I would use the 427 tall block and stroke it to 509in. The motor made a lot of heat under the hood. Put two 3 core radiators together to keep it cool.

I can explain it to you but I can't help you understand it.

It was close enough that they may have rubbed under engine torquing on accel, Scott | | |
