I wanted to share with ya'll the tailgate I did to get a visual of the old worn out orange paint job I am trying to replicate on my '65 Chevy truck. I figured the inside of the tailgate was a good place to do that.

Starting with a freshly sandblasted tailgate the first step was rolling on (yep, used 4" wide roller) 2 coats of red-oxide primer and then spraying (Rustoleum rattle can) 1 coat of orange top coat.

The links below show photos of what it looks like after sanding with some 320 grit. I need to knock down the gloss in the crevices with some red Scotch-brite pads and maybe scour the entire thing with some Ajax and a scrub brush.

Unconventional... yep. But I am pretty stoked though about how this is turning out.

People keep asking when am I going to paint my 'burb. It has a patina job that it earned naturally. With people trying to fake that look, I see no reason to change mine.

Glad to see im not the only one with a rattle can interior paint job.

i like it...think you pretty much nailed it...that being said...the only thing that would concern me is the fact that the primer is porous and offers no protection.....my thoughts would to maybe do a base color of something ...maybe black paint to seal off and protect the metal then do your red primer and finally orange......just my .02 anyway.....dave

The primer is not going to give you UV protection either. To get that flat primer look use orange base coat mixed 25% with clear coat hardener and reduce 50%. That's what the kids nowdays are using on their rice burners.

Put the big buck paint job on it then put the bra on the front because you are affraid to scratch it. Then you will find that sand and dust got under your bra and scratched the devil out of it.

I do appreciate the input but remember the entire idea is to make the truck look rusty and sunburnt, and the rustier and more sunburnt it gets over time the better.

The chemical compostion of the primer and paint being used is very similar to what was used back in the 60's. One would therefore think it should age "appropriately".

I know a lot of people hate the concept but that's ok, variety is the spice of life!
