The engine has an SM 465 4 speed with it. Are there any engine mods to the crank or other issues if I try to go with an automatic trans, and is the 700r4 the best option. All this stuff is going in a 47 P/U 3/4. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,212 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 5,212 | Any Chevrolet bell housing will fit, so you have a wide choice of transmissions. No change to the crank will be needed. Spec the flex plate to the same tooth count as the flywheel so the starter fits assuming the starter bolts to the engine. Some used a three bolt starter that fit the trans housing. I believe the common 168 tooth flex plate is standard, 153 is the small diameter one.
The 700r4 is a big heavy trans that works great, for a lighter 4 speed you can use a 200r4 which is based off the T350.

Unless you get a flexplate for a 292 you will need to drill the holes out to 1/2 in. 86 up flexplate will not fit. The real early 292's had the 7/16 bolts like the others.
