Working on the rear diff...Shop manual shows what the play should be between the axle ends and the spacer block. But what should be the play between the pinion shaft and the axle spacer? Mine shows about 1/8 inch of play when the pinion is in the spacer. The pinion shaft doesn't look worn. Is the axle spacer block worn out from the inside? It has grooves on the inside.

No bolters want to take this question on so I called Patrick at Patricks Antique Trucks in Arizona. Patrick says the rattle of the pinion inside the spacer block is not a concern. Just make sure the clearance between the spacer block and the axles ends meets specs. Patrick has been very willing to help me with all my OCD questions and he has cool products too.
