Im currently working on a 1950 GMC 100 pickup, it has the 3 speed trans with a 228 I6 motor. Ive opted to take the three speed out in lieu of a Saginaw 4 speed swap with a more modern rear end. I also was considering doing some performance work to the 228, which is why I'm here. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to beef up the 228 motor? Cams, twin carbs, new head etc? Where are places that offer performance parts for these motors? I have also considered a 305 or 350 SBC swap...would I be better financially to do that? Thanks for any tips or advise in advance!
The 270 and 302 are a virtual drop in for the 228. 1955-1962 270 and 302 gmc engines will need to have the front timing plate changed to bolt into your 1950 chassis.
Don't forget there are also a lot of knowledgeable folks over at oldgmctrucks.com.
270 gmc engines were rated for 130-140 hp from the factory. 302 gmc engines were rated for 140-160 hp. the 228 in comparrison was from 88 to about 110 hp. If you're going for performance, the 270 and 302 are a much better place to start. My 302 which was linked above is built for about 225 HP. (Not dynoed). A mild 270 build should yield 175-195 hp. A mild 302 should yield 195-225 hp.
I have also considered a 305 or 350 SBC swap...would I be better financially to do that? Thanks for any tips or advise in advance!

Yes it would be cheaper to put a 350 in it but then it would be just like 9 out of 10 trucks out there. It will cost more to build a GMC 6 but you will have a 1 in 10 truck.
Check out the links Swingdaddy posted. I hope you'll be convinced.

Cletis, I agree with you completely. I was at a local car show last night and only 50's era truck had the factory motor left in it! Swingdaddy, the motor you sent the link of is killer! I did a few quick searches on ebay and only found one 302 GMC motor for sale, and it was a military take out (non-running and couldn't get it to turn). Are there any good resources to get my hands on a good 302 to start with? I plan on building it over this winter, hopefully able to pull the 228 in the spring and have it ready for shows by next summer. Thanks for the input guys, this site is GREAT!
