Would like to keep it a 4 speed. Will a muncie m22 go in the truck while keeping the original floor? And what about adding overdrive? I think it would go nicely with the 4.10 rear after I swap the third member. But this is new territory for me, so I am open to suggestions.

I would like to know what has worked for others, I am amazed by the work some folks have done to their stovebolt.

The truck has a '59 235 and I plan on keeping that but would also like to keep it a 4 speed.

If it has a 4 speed and you want to keep it then why don't you just keep it?

If you want an OD you either add one before or after the existing transmission or give up on the 4 speed and swap to a 5 speed OD.

That is what I am asking... I didn't know you could add OD to the original 4 speed. Do you have a vendor I can contact?

http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_and_gear/rangeroverdrive.htm
"Ranger Gear Splitter", an OD to go in front.

I believe this is the same thing from Advance Adapters, they call it a "Ranger Torque Splitter" Like the other folks they have a few different models to match your needs.

Or Gear vendors sells an OD to go behind.

And there was a similar but different one from US gear, don't see them on the website and from what I've heard about them I wouldn't go hunting one either.

Finally there are old auxiliary transmission options, one of the more practical of them would be a Spicer model 5831. Even so it's a fair amount of weight and old parts to scrounge up and figure out how to install, I'd put it lower on the list than the others linked to above..

Don't know what I was doing when I did a search cause none of that came up... Pretty nice having 3 or 4 options, I have been restoring military trucks for 10 years and most of the time the options are fewer.

Looks like the gear vendors unit is push button or switch, that may be the best for me. Anyone have any feed back on gear vendors?

Thanks for the info Grigg

Know a few folks that have had or still have a gear vendors unit. The impression I get from them is it's a fine unit.... but it's not near as good as they claim it is. Main thing is it won't last holding back aginst the engine on a down hill.
Overall a good option if you understand the limitations.
Again I don't have first hand experience ...

Useing it as a sort of Jake Brake probably puts a different kindof stress on it than it was designed for so that is understandable.

It looks like the floor will not need any modifications to make it work so that is a plus.

A Jake brake is an engine compression brake. Using a GV in combination with a Jake brake is hard on the GV unit. One of my friends had two of them replaced under warranty until they figured out the Jake brake was causing the problem, removed the Jake brakes from the engine and the third one has lasted fine they say. Apparently GV didn't know of this limitation to start with and I don't think they mention it on the website.

A big cubic inch gas engine holding back on a hill could have the same effect on a GV unit as the diesel with a Jake brake did.
