HI.....I have the oppurtunity to purchase two Carter YF carbs but I don't have any idea which is the right one (or both) that will fit my 235 engine built in 1955 for my 3100 1954PU.. Here are the numbers..Carter YF L35 1-630 938SA 6-1657 stamped on the float chamber numbers 0-944. The last patent number is 2241655.... The other reads Carter YF CR 6-792 stamped on the float chamber numbers X1538. The last patent number is 2658733....any help would be great on this post I'm always reading how good the Carters are compared with my leakchester B and how hard they are to find.....THANKS, Steve ohwell

Let me check mine tomorrow after work and see what the numbers are. I've got one on a 48 235 which I think has a different bolt spacing on the manifold.

I'll post what I find tomorrow evening.

Those don't look like anything on Carbking's list from long ago. Check his site to see what you may have

After checking mine it appears to be a Carter YF-2100S with the last patent number being 2854399. I think that just adds to your confusion.

There are many Carter YF versions for various engines and years.

The model number on mine is stamped on the flange that connect to the cast iron base.
It's the number followed by and 'S'.

Here are the Chevy YF models from 1932-62:

756S, SA, 787S, SA, SB, 788S, SA, 789S, SA, 964S, 965S, 966S, 967S, 2008S, 2046S, 2100S, 2101S, 3211S

Looks like you got one Model 938SA, but it doesn't list as a Chevy model.

Here is a discussion that contains CarbKing's EXCELLENT discussion of YF model numbers and applicability. Bookmark it to your favorites.

I didn't see the carbs you were asking about. You might want to check the carburetor ID page for some help.

Steve - YF3211S is the model supposed to have been marketed as a replacement for mid to late 50's 235's with Rochesters. It has an auto. choke. I have no way to check this info, but that's what most sellers say. I have run one on a 235 & it worked OK for me. The 4 digit # followed always by an 'S' is what most guys use to ID them. Doug

Steve..I did a search on YF 938S and there is one thread on that model. However, it was in Spanish (no kidding)...Goggle translated it and it was a repair thread on that model 938S. Unfortunately it doesn't cite an application.

That link was awesome. Thank you for at least answering my un-asked questions. I now know the vintage of my carb.

This site rules. grin

For 235 1950 and up go with any of the following (later models with higher numbers would be more desirable)

788S manual choke
789S auto choke
966S manual choke
967S auto choke
2100S manual choke
2101S manual choke
3211S auto choke

You can get an auto choke version and simply convert it with NAPA kit to manual choke, for about $20.

If it needs rebuilding, I highly recommend to go with carbking's repair kits.
These are custom assembled by hand for your particular carb and have parts in them you won't find in the regular kits, sold by parts stores eveywhere.

Steve...I think I identified your carb...Carter's YF 938 is for a 1958 134ci 4 cylinder motor (similar or the same as military 134ci). Found it in a listing on "thecarburetorshop.com" website.

By the way, I have an NOS YF 3211S (electric choke) if you're interested.
