It's been a while since I've worked on the 261 for my '59 Apache project.
Yesterday I installed the glass bowl fuel filter screen with gasket and attached the bowl assembly to the carburator.
I also installed the new throw-out bearing and buckled down the trannie. I now, need to turn the engine so I can tighten the clutch pressure plate bolts. I plan on getting two birds with one stone... This will be a good opportunity to set the valves.

I bought a single chrome cone-style hubcap off Ebay and it arrived yesterday evening... ten bucks! I planned on buying a new set of these for the '59 Apache truck. This one will be for the side-mounted spare tire... This reminds me, I need a rim for the spare!
Though a small thing, I've realized my project direction is now beginning to swing from truck powerplant to truck body.
I'm still excited!

Got her inspected (one front brake needs adjustment) everything else passed with flying colors! In Utah they let you use original plates if you have a pair they get lots of comments when you stop anywhere. Best comment so far was my 4-year old grandson who after his first ride said "thanks papa I like what you did with my truck!"

This was the first time working on my truck since I bought it.

Previously thought my motor was frozen, but used some helpfull advise from the forum.

I took out and cleaned up all the sparkplugs and wires. Some of the wires broke from being so old. While the plugs were out, I sprayed some wd-40 into the cylinders.

I jacked up the left rear wheel, and put into a high gear. I then rocked the wheel back and forth until I seen the driveline finally start to move. The motor was turning thank god.

I put in my new 6 volt battery. The clamps are very old and brittle, so it was hooked up loosley. I checked the lights, they came on. I dont have a key for the truck, but thought I would try my luck to push the foot starter anyways. The starter turned the motor, but then stopped probably because of the loose conecction and corroded battery wires.

I got motivated by the motor turning, so I decided to start cleaning out the cab. I removed the bottom seat to find the whole underneath of the seat was filled with empty walnut shells and a nest! No dirty rat though. I cleaned it all out and found that my dirty original seat, when cleaned up has barely any wear and not one rip!

Im starting to have feelings for this ole' GMC

Went to Gus's drive-in in East Troy Wisconsin for their seasonal grand opening. On any Saturday evening during the summer about 40/50 cars show up. My daughter and I took the Sub, had a chili dog and a pop, looked at all the cool stuff and came home. About a 125 mile round trip.

Drove out to a local rod run and show. About 350 vehicles - a lot of nice rides. Had a good time and the ol' 38 ran great.

I've been on the road in the Suburban since Wednesday. 1750 miles so far. Five hundred or more to go. She's running great.

I put together the rear brakes this morning and made plans to go to the truck show on June 11 at Bethlehem Fairgrounds CT. Both sides rub the drums slightly when I spin it- is that normal ? still on jack stands. It looks like the shoes are pulled in as far as they will go- the wheel cylinders are all the way in. The emergency brake works both sides and retracts. JG

Keep movin' forward.

New tires and one piece rims. Bye bye to the two piece rims and hard as a rock rotten old 8 ply tires still on there from when I bought it a year ago for a restoration project. All suspension/steering/brakes/wheel work is now done!

Body work augh..I have 98% of my body work experience doing motorcycles, so every time I attack the truck I feel like a back yard gardener gone acres farmer. The doors are a real pain, it is like acres of sheet metal that have every conceivable ding, ripple and dip possible. I am very picky and my dollies and hammers have been getting a work out,not to mention skim coats of bondo and lots of sanding, I like the bondo at a minimum. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel getting closer or I am going sun blind working in it. But hey like a friend once told me, any fat looks better tan..lol..too bad any I have is covered in t-shirts and sanding dust..

She's up and running- I'm driving it everywhere, which has been an education! My son is refusing to drive in anything but the truck now-
Have some questions too, I'll post 'em in other sections but here are some pics:

Wel my truck is way under construction. So I'm basically buying parts from LMC ( I now have the complete bed ) minus the wood all new from LMC. I have pulled dash pieces except for the speedo and e other large gauge. I have sand blasted all the small parts and covered them in black rustoleum. 2 boxes arrived yesterday the cross pieces and the 4 stake holders. I'm working days this week not gonna do anything until Friday il go down and try and finish stripping the inside for sandblasting.

Woke up my 1958 Chevy 1/2 with a 261 after an 11 year nap. (Except for occaisionally firing it up to move it) Kids are excited. They haven't seen it run. (Yes it's been parked too long.)

Got the brakes working now, had to rebuild the carb. Cleaned the cab out. Got the working vacuum wiper motor mounted. (Can't find the spring loaded clip)Clutch wasn't stuck to the flywheel.

Sounds like it never was parked. I get all the lights and horn working it should be about ready to drive. Will have to wait on paint for now. I need it to work. Pics coming later.

Try to get some tomorrow. It's nasty, and I had to stop to go to church tonight. But I'll get there. (It's ugly right now). LOL But it runs again.

Replaced the 'universal' replacement headlight switch (with non-removable shaft)with a 'like original' one which allows the use of the original shaft and knob. Also put in a jumper to allow the park lights to stay on when the headlights are on. No smoke!

It's a small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it.

I'm close enough that I purchased the new battery for the panel today. I also cut some gaskets to go between the LED tailights and hte body. Permanently attached the ground cable to the bellhousing and some other small stuff. I'm beginning to close in on this project.....finally.

... and UGH...did I mentioned I had forgot a cross sill under the panel and had to pull the gas tank and partially the straps to get it put in place! Talk about mad at myself. Grrrrrr

Finally got around to changing the oil pan gasket. This time I used thread to tie the gasket to the pan, guide pins in the block holes, and I dropped the front axle to gain more working clearance. I used a little gasket sealer on the end gaskets and set them in the groove on the block this time. Last time I set it all on the pan and they pushed in enough to leak. This time seems to be working.

....finally got the gas pedal located and bolted down and all hooked up.... then put all four wheels back on the floor and tried to adjust that blasted hood....got it a little better with Dakota's help but decided I'd fight that battle some more later!

Had to remove the new steering shaft we installed a couple weeks ago. Had a slight rubbing on the motor mount. Went in there with the grinder and removed a hair of the mount. Works fine now!!!!

finished flat bed on the '52 1-ton today - the stake sides come next, but this much will suffice for the moment - at least now i can go pick up some firewood. found a great little nonprofit that dismantles old houses in my area and reclaims the lumber - I got about 130 linear feet of nice old rough-hewn 2x8 for $50... after a bit of sanding, some sealant, and the steel rim i had made for me by a welder i found on craigslist (welding... a skill I wish I had... alas, it's not), I'm pretty pleased with the way it looks on there.

Joe glad to hear that you are back at Marge again,

Got the engine back togeather on the 50 and fired it up for the first time tonight, ran it for about 1/2 hr. then did the valve ajust again so at least its back running time to work on the body again, would like to have it back in some what 1 piece by Aug.
