Thanks Wrenchbender. Will it affect the operation of the carb? in other words should I plug it?

It vents the bowl of the carburetor...the guts of the carburetor. I've never seen one like that! Does it have the angled brass tube in the throat too.

Yeah, it has the brass tube. other than the vent hole it is pretty similar to my other Rochester, with the exception of a passage from the accelerator plunger tube into the main bowl that is regulated by a small ball bearing on one side and covered with a fine screen on the bowl side.

Kermit54,

I'm not the King-O-Carbs, but it sounds like that hole is something special, not just a vent.

It was probably the result of a "home brewed" fix, to vent the float chamber. I'd say plug it up, all it will do is make a spot to spill gasoline on the manifold making a fire hazard. As long as the brass tube is clear that's all the vent you need.

I don't know what it is, but it doesn't look 'home brewed'...it has a nice cast margin around it and almost looks like it has a inner liner...not just a hole through the thin wall.

Its clearly part of the original casting. I can't tell if it ever had anything in it (no visible signs). I just don't understand why you would need another vent hole in addition to the brass tube vent.
