| | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 101 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 101 | Anyone have any idea(s) why when I attempt to start my truck it sounds like the pinion gear isn't meshing properly with the flywheel. Sometimes it acts as if my battery is dead, and there is only a clicking. The battery is fully charged with new pos. and neg. cables. Grounds are all done properly. Also, when it does start, it sounds like the pinion gear is still dragging on the flywheel. I have had my starter and solenoid tested and they were both in good running order. Also replaced my ignition switch. I have a 54 1/2 ton, 12 volt system with hydramatic transmission, and a 235 c.i. engine.

| | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy Ted W, if your starter has a black tag then it is a six volt one, using twelve volts to activate a six volt solenoid may damage it, causing it not to function correctly. Do you have a manual for your truck? If your starter has an exposed link on the solenoid there is an adjustment procedure to make sure it is engaging the flywheel correctly.If it was my stuff I would try to find a twelve volt solenoid for the starter. My starter does have the exposed link, and I did the adjustment again today. That helped the noise that sounded like the pinion gear wasn't completely free of the flywheel. Still having problems with it not always engaging properly. It clicks and sounds as if it is trying to turn slow. If I hit the ignition switch a few times it eventually engages and starts as it should. I checked and my starter is a 12 volt as is my solenoid.
