on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2011 Posts: 10 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2011 Posts: 10 | I recently bought a 1961 Chevy C 60. It was bought new by a lumber yard and then went to the seller in 66, so it's not had the usual trail of various owners/ repairs. They did have the 261 rebuilt when it threw a rod, so it's been apart. It now has a 12v positive ground, I'm assuming they maybe changed the generator, the fields were reversed so they just went with it? I'm thinking I could change it back, switch the polarity back on the generator and be all good. Thoughts? | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 | Not trying to be a smartie but, are you sure it's a positive ground. Don't go by the color of the battery wires. Put a voltmeter to it. BTW, if you were to use a neg. ground starter, won't it turn the wrong way?

You will reverse perm magnet by reversing line leads.

The ground cable goes from the block to the positive (+). The coil wires are neg. to the points , and pos. to the supply, which is actually backward for positive ground but it's running fine. I had posted elsewhere that some older coils had double windings which allowed them to work either way. I don't have the answers, but I am confident this truck should be negative ground and I would like to correct it. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,464 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 1,464 | I would do what beltfed said. The battery could be hooked up backwards and may have a reverse charge. In other words, it could LOOK like a positive ground system but be operating as a Neg. ground system. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 | If it's so I'd like to ask the guy who did it, why...? You'll have to change the generator and starter, reverse the leads on your ampmeter, do something with the voltage regulator also. Boy, I'd put a voltmeter on this thing before I got too deep into it. Does the starter turn the right way with this setup?

Right after a session with the voltmeter! I appreciate any and all input from you guys, and right now it starts and runs fine and all but the horn and the L front signal works. I will post what I find out , this is a dandy! | | |
