Ok, I got the carb all done on the 54 150, now on the first down the road test, we see that the car pops out of first gear when under torque (like take off). In 2nd gear theres a eerie whining sound and 3rd is good. I know that cars have a different tranny than the trucks but you are all pretty smart folks on here, any comments concerns or suggestions? Please remember, I'm 14 and need some guidance from you with experience.

My first thing to do would be to drain the oil out of it and see if there is a bunch of metal in the bottom of it. You could pull the side cover and take a look, send pictures when you open it up and someone here will give advice. I may have some parts for you if you need some, I have input, output shafts, cases, complete side cover with shift forks. Dave

I think it should be known that this car was sitting for about 40 years. the last time it was known to be moved was in 1971. The last time it was licensed was 1959. This may be the reason it was parked because there is nothing majorly wrong that we have found so far. I will drain the oil tonight and save it so I can look for filings. Thanks.

Popping out of gear and/or noise in 1st. and 2nd. gear indicate you've got problems with the reduction gears, countershaft bearings, or other major difficulties. Drop the transmission out and do a full teardown and overhaul. The reason the noise goes away in 3rd. gear is the fact that the power goes straight through without being transmitted through any gears. This takes the load off the cluster gear and the 1st. and 2nd. reduction gears. Jumping out of 1st. is usually caused by a missing tooth on either the 1st. reduction gear or the 1st. gear position of the cluster gear. Don't do any more driving until the trans is repaired- - - -one broken tooth in the wrong place can hand-grenade the whole transmission, case and all.
