I just noticed my gas gauge needle was stuck behind the inner cluster divider...So I took my gauge cluster out...I hate doing that...anyway I have the cluster out( gauge is still in cluster) and the gas needle is pegged at the 9 oclock position, it flows freely when moved but goes back to 9 oclock...is there a way to bench test the gauge...with out taking the sending unit out of the gas tank & before I put it all back together to find out it's broken.

Did you do this with no power on it?

Yes you can test without sender. Use VOM and check resistance of sender at both empty and full if you can do it. Then get resistors of corresponding values and hooke em up one at a time to simulate empty and full. You may also be able to get resistance values out of manual??

The best way to bench test is to remove the sender

Remember to ground the sender,cluster,then wire as it is in the truck. sender wire to gauge and power to gauge.

with the sender out you can check it with a meter. mine is 30 ohm

I will add this about a pinched needle (1950 cluster)
I noticed the new gauge sits higher in the cluster.

I made a spacer out of gasket material to keep the bezel from hitting the needle.
you may not need this, try pushing the bezel out a bit.

My experience with my 51 is that once the gauge starts to hangup, it is game over.
