Ok guys, I want to swap the chuck style, pumkin housing from the rear of my '53 chevy, 3/4 ton with the rear of a '67-'72 chevy as described in the following article:

I found a rear in TX the guy's willing to ship for me. He said its a "Eaton HO 52 non-locker, removed from a 69' Chevy with coils". The photos for his rear are here: https://picasaweb.google.com/prpytlik/RearEndInTX#

According to the article this should be the one I want shouldn't it? The only number I could find on mine was 3699505 but I can't make heads or tails out of it. Could anyone give me some advice - like telling me it will work (or you know for sure it won't). I've had no luck finding this where it's either close enough to go get or where the guy's willing to ship. I'm just afraid I'm gonna buy this and it's not gonna be right (I'm gonna verify with him its a 2 wheel drive with auto according to the article). He want $100 for it and the "guestimate" to ship a box it will fit in that weighs around 75lbs is about $50. Should I take the chance? I really want to have a rear I can go 60 mph in. Any advice appreciated.

That looks like the right one. Is there any ay he can get you the code from the 3rd memeber? It should be stamped on the front face of the 3rd member on the passenger side. The 4.10 codes are NA, NB, OT, OW, OY, and TF for '69.

Bill, I'm gonna show my ignorance here because I don't know any way to hide this - but what exactly is a "third member"? Would this be part of the frame?

On the some style differentials, like the ones under our old Chevies, the part that carries the gears is removable from the main differential housing for service. That part is called a "third member". Some also refer to it as a "hogshead", "pumpkin", or "center chunk".

thanks, I sent the codes to him to see if he could check. The price sounds fair to me, especially since I can't find one - does it sound fair to everyone else or am I way off base?

Price sounds fine to me. It's about what a 3/4 ton rearend runs for in my area.

Bill, He looked for that code but said he couldn't find anything like that. He took it apart and said the oil was clean and the gears looked pretty good. He took pictures of what he did find. Could someone take a look at these and see if it looks like it should. I think I can do this swap if its just take mine out and put this in, but if there's alot of assembly or something difficult in it that's not listed in the article I posted in my first post I'm afraid I might be in a little above my head. Anyway, here's the pics he took. Please let me know. Thanks

Things look ok to me, no funny wear marks on the teeth. Just making a rough count of the teeth on the ring, I'm inclined to beleive it is the 4.10 gear. Swapping the third member shouldn't be any issue, though if you have a shop manual, that would be helpfull. If not, the '49-'51 manual is available free online.
