Today, out of nowhere, my '51 started popping out of 3rd. On a 3 speed, this means a lot of slow driving unless I hold it in gear. I switched motors over the winter and had the tranny out. New throw bearing, fork looked good, clutch is all good. Drove it without problems until today. Trying to figure it out, I noticed it doesn't "click" into 3rd like the other gears. I don't think its anything wearing out since there was no warning at all. Linkage was never touched in the swap.

Any help?

Maybe the shift rod for 2nd & 3rd gear got bent when you changed the motor?

First thing to do is readjust the linkage, follow the shop manual,if you don't have one they are online .I don't know how to link stuff, somone will help here , but it's easy to adjust the rods, that "click" is the detent in the trans arm When it's fully in gear as things wear it may not be pushing the arm fully into gear thus no "click".
